Edition 73: Subject Line Workshop and Blog

We have seen MSLs completely transform their email response rates from less than 10% open rates to over 50% by changing 1 thing. And it’s probably not what you think.
HCP/KOL access is one of the biggest challenges MSLs face and will continue to face as AI use continues to grow. We see this in Sarah's LinkedIn poll data: 43% say KOL access is the top challenge for MSLs, n = 633. So no big surprise that our KOL Access program is one of our most popular programs.
In this program, we talk A LOT about emails because this is the first line of contact for MSLs. Our Email Lab workshop consistently produces the biggest results. MSLs who were getting responses from fewer than 10% of their KOLs have jumped above 20%. Some have reached 25% to 50%.
With growing KOL lists and how much time people spend on writing emails, those results are freaking huge. In Email Lab, we completely flip how you approach emails on its head. But the part that MSLs spend the least time on is what makes the biggest difference:
The subject line
A KOL will not respond to an email they never open.
We have asked MSLs who have participated in Email Lab what was the game changer. We hear the same thing over and over: it’s taking our tips on writing subject lines.
You will never regret getting better at writing better subject lines, and this newsletter has 3 tips to help you get started.
1. Start In Your Own Inbox: The Subject Line Showdown
One of our favorite moments in Email Lab happens in the prework. We send a simple worksheet (reply to this email if you want a copy and we will send it to you) and ask everyone to find 2 emails from external senders and 1 from an internal sender. Then just ask them to react to these questions without overthinking:
- Would you open it?
- Does it spark curiosity?
- Is it clearly about you, not them?
People start noticing that the subject lines they want to open are the ones that immediately feel relevant to them.  The weaker ones usually have something else in common: they are written entirely from the sender’s point of view.
Once folks see that pattern in your own inbox, it becomes painfully easy to spot in your own emails.
2. Killer Subject Line AI Prompt to Help
You know how you can't see typos in your own work? That happens with bad subject lines you've written as well. Try this AI prompt in Mira to get ideas.
Review this subject line from the recipient’s perspective. Does it make the relevance clear and give this specific person a reason to open the email? Identify where it focuses too heavily on what I want. Then write five stronger options using nine words or fewer. Avoid clickbait and promotional language.
Recipient: [Who they are]
What matters to them: [Topic, question or priority]
Purpose of the email: [Why you are writing]
Current subject line: [Paste it here]

Most of the time, the difference between silence and a response is not what's inside the email.
It is the 9 words or less sitting on top.
